Attention Notaries: New Wording for Acknowledgments & Jurats

Assembly Bill 886, which takes effect January 1, 2008, provides for several key changes, including:

  • The removal of “personally known to me” from both the Acknowledgment and Jurat.
  • The addition of a Penalty of Perjury statement to the Acknowledgment.
  • Notaries are now required to obtain a thumbprint for a Power of Attorney.

Detailed information about all of the changes for 2008 and how they affect your notary practice is available here.

You may also download for free the updated Acknowledgment and Jurat forms. The new law does not change the procedure for a subscribing witness, but a credible witness (even one personally known to the notary) must provide satisfactory evidence.
